Samsung Announces World-First Breakthrough in Fainting Prediction With Galaxy Watch

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that a joint clinical study with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea has successfully validated the ability to predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) with high accuracy by utilizing biosignals obtained from Galaxy Watch6.

Vasovagal syncope occurs when a person’s heart rate and blood pressure drop abruptly due to factors like excessive stress, leading to a temporary loss of consciousness. While the fainting spell itself is typically not life-threatening, sudden falls can cause severe secondary injuries like fractures or concussions, making early prediction critically important for prevention.

“Up to 40% of people experience vasovagal syncope over their lifetime, with one-third experiencing recurrent episodes," said Professor Junhwan Cho of the Department of Cardiology at Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital. "An early warning could give patients advance time to get into a safe position or call for help, which would dramatically reduce the incidence of secondary injuries."

The joint research team, led by Professor Cho, conducted evaluations on 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms during induced fainting tests. Using a Galaxy Watch equipped with a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, the team analyzed the watch’s heart rate variability (HRV) data with an AI algorithm. The model successfully predicted impending fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance with 84.6 percent accuracy, at a clinically meaningful sensitivity of 90 percent and a specificity of 64 percent.

“This study is an example of how wearable technology can help shift healthcare from being designed for ‘post-care’ to a model of ‘preventive care,’” said Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to driving technological innovation that empowers our users to lead healthier everyday lives.”

The research findings were published in Volume 7, Issue 4 of “European Heart Journal – Digital Health,” a leading medical journal, and they represent the world's first study to successfully demonstrate the potential for a commercial smartwatch to provide early prediction of syncope.

Samsung plans to further advance the health monitoring capabilities of its wearable portfolio and expand collaboration with leading medical institutions. Through these efforts, the company aims to lead the digital health industry and accelerate the implementation of personalized, preventive health solutions.

Samsung Galaxy's Ocean Mode and Coral Reef Initiative Receive International Recognition and Awards

 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. recently announced that its “Coral in Focus” initiative, powered by Ocean Mode 1 , an advanced camera feature on the newer Galaxy mobile phones, has received multiple awards for its contributions to coral reef conservation, including Gold in the “Best Sustainability or Conservation Initiative” category at Engage for Good’s 2026 Halo Awards.

Additionally, “Coral in Focus,” a documentary tied to the initiative, received the Coastal and Island Culture Award at the 23rd International Ocean Film Festival. Samsung was separately named to Fast Company’s 2026 Most Innovative Companies list for its work advancing mobile innovation in environmental research.

These recognitions reflect the impact of Samsung’s efforts to reverse the decline of coral reefs in partnership with U.S.-based nonprofit organization Seatrees and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. By bringing together Galaxy’s advanced image capturing capabilities,

Seatrees’ community-driven restoration model and Scripps’ knowledge on marine science, Samsung is transforming Galaxy mobile phones into powerful tools for ocean conservation.

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor yet support approximately 25% of all marine life and sustain millions of livelihoods worldwide 2 . This process improves how coral reefs are monitored and evaluated, resulting in critical insight into reef health and recovery.

Together, Samsung, Seatrees and Scripps have driven meaningful impact across restoration sites. To date, more than 20,000 coral fragments have been planted, and over 80 3D reef models have been built to support monitoring and research efforts.

Emirates completes more than 40 Travel Rehearsals for youth with autism globally, easing travel anxiety for more than 250 families

In a significant step towards inclusive travel, Emirates has expanded its efforts to support neurodiverse passengers through its Emirates Travel Rehearsal programme, now successfully conducted across more than 40 cities worldwide.

Over the past year, the initiative has benefited more than 250 families, offering children and young adults with autism the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the airport journey — a process often associated with anxiety and sensory overwhelm.

Building Confidence Through Familiarity

Designed as a guided, real-time simulation of the travel experience, the programme allows participants to rehearse each stage of the airport process — from check-in and baggage drop to immigration, security clearance and boarding.

For many individuals on the autism spectrum, predictability and routine are essential. Airports, with their fast pace, unfamiliar procedures and sensory stimuli, can present significant challenges. Emirates’ Travel Rehearsals aim to address this gap by providing a structured and supportive environment in which participants can experience and understand the journey before undertaking an actual flight.

In selected locations, participants are also given access to aircraft, allowing them to step onboard and interact with cabin crew — a gesture that further enhances familiarity and confidence.

From Pilot Initiative to Global Programme

Following the success of initial trials in Dubai, which received strong endorsement from families, educators and autism organisations, Emirates formalised the initiative through its Office of Accessibility & Inclusion, scaling it into a global programme.

Since April 2025, travel rehearsals have been conducted in cities spanning six continents, including London, Paris, Sydney, Toronto, Dubai, Hong Kong and Barcelona. The programme is supported by close collaboration between Emirates teams, airport authorities, border control and security agencies, as well as local schools and autism centres.

More than 35,000 Emirates staff worldwide have undergone specialised training to better assist customers with autism, ensuring that support extends beyond rehearsals into the actual travel experience.

Sami Aqil Abdullah, Senior Vice President of Emirates Airport Services Outstation & Business Support, described the initiative as a collective success.

“The Emirates Travel Rehearsal programme has been a resounding success across six continents, with strong collaboration from our teams, airport partners, and the families who trusted us. We will continue to expand this programme to reach more communities and empower more families to travel with confidence.”

Addressing a Global Travel Barrier

According to a survey conducted by AutismTravel.com, 78% of families with autistic members are hesitant to travel due to the challenges posed by unfamiliar environments and sensory triggers.

For many, international travel is not merely inconvenient but overwhelming — leading some families to avoid it altogether.

Emirates’ initiative directly addresses this barrier, transforming what can be an intimidating experience into one that is manageable, and ultimately, achievable.

Voices from the Community

Feedback from participants across the programme highlights its tangible impact.

Parents and educators have described the rehearsals as “invaluable,” noting that the experience offers clarity and reassurance that cannot be replicated through explanation alone.

One parent in Angola shared that they had avoided travelling for a decade due to anxiety, but now feel confident planning a trip. In Düsseldorf, a 13-year-old participant expressed newfound courage, saying he was no longer afraid to fly.

Educators and autism group leaders have also praised the initiative for its attention to detail — from sensory-friendly considerations to the patience and understanding demonstrated by staff.

Beyond practical preparation, the programme has also delivered moments of joy and empowerment, with children expressing excitement at boarding aircraft, interacting with crew, and experiencing elements of travel previously out of reach.

A Broader Commitment to Accessibility

The Travel Rehearsal programme forms part of Emirates’ wider commitment to accessible travel. As the world’s first autism-certified airline, the carrier continues to invest in initiatives designed to support neurodiverse passengers at every stage of their journey.

These include onboard sensory products and fidget tools available across all cabin classes, as well as a dedicated Accessible & Inclusive Travel Hub on its website.
