Samsung and Google Cloud Join Forces to Bring Generative AI to Samsung Galaxy S24 Series

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Google Cloud today announced a new multi-year partnership to bring Google Cloud’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology to Samsung smartphone users around the globe. Starting with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series announced today at Galaxy Unpacked in San Jose, California, Samsung will be the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI via the cloud to their smartphone devices.

“Google and Samsung have long shared deeply held values around the importance of making technology more helpful and accessible for everyone. We’re thrilled that the Galaxy S24 series is the first smartphone equipped with Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI,” said Janghyun Yoon, Corporate EVP and Head of Software Office of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “After months of rigorous testing and competitive evaluation, the Google Cloud and Samsung teams worked together to deliver the best Gemini-powered AI experience on Galaxy.” 

Samsung is the first Google Cloud partner to deploy Gemini Pro on Vertex AI to consumers. Built from the ground up to be multimodal, Gemini can generalize and seamlessly understand, operate across, and combine different types of information including text, code, images, and video. Starting with Samsung-native applications, users can take advantage of the summarization feature across Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard.  Gemini Pro on Vertex AI provides Samsung with critical Google Cloud features, including security, safety, privacy, and data compliance. 

Galaxy S24 series users can also immediately benefit from Imagen 2, Google’s most advanced text-to-image diffusion technology from Google DeepMind to date. With Imagen 2 on Vertex AI, Samsung can bring safe and intuitive photo-editing capabilities into users’ hands. These features can be found in Generative Edit  in Galaxy S24’s Gallery application. 

As part of this partnership, Samsung is also one of the first customers to test Gemini Ultra, Google’s most capable and largest model for highly-complex tasks. The Galaxy S24 series will also use Gemini Nano, an on-device LLM delivered as part of the Android 14 operating system, the most efficient model of Gemini for on-device tasks.

Breaking Language Barriers: Trying Out AI-Powered Live Translate on Galaxy S24 Ultra in San Jose, CA

 

 Whether you’re in a business meeting, traveling abroad or making a restaurant reservation, communication is key. On January 17, when Samsung Electronics released its latest lineup of Galaxy products powered by Galaxy AI, the company also unveiled a personal interpreter right in your pocket. With the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Live Translate feature, talking to anyone on the phone in another language is suddenly easier — no matter what kind of device the other person is using.

Samsung Newsroom put the Live Translate feature to the test with a call to a local modern Italian American restaurant in downtown San Jose, California. Here’s the firsthand experience and how this innovation is breaking down language barriers and transforming the way users communicate.

Live Translate: Connect With People, Places and Cultures Any Time, in Any Language

To make the reservation, a Korean editor from Samsung Newsroom first pressed the Live Translate button on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, then dialled the number. Once she connected with a restaurant employee, an automated message announced, “Hello. This call is being translated and live captioned.”

“Hello, how may I help you?” replied a restaurant hostess on the other line. The Newsroom editor responded in Korean, “Hello! I’d like to make a reservation for this Thursday at 1:30 PM.” After pausing to listen to the translation, the restaurant asked for the total number of people. The editor continued in Korean, “Six. Can I make a reservation for a window seat?” The Live Translate feature then seamlessly conveyed this message to the restaurant employee in English.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Live Translate feature supports up to 17 languages including variations at launch, providing both audio and onscreen text translations of conversations. It remembers the language used for each person contacted, automatically setting it for future calls. Plus, it also functions seamlessly across all phone types — even a landline. When the Korean editor first tried it out, she was amazed at how immediately the language barrier disappeared.

On the day of the reservation, Samsung Newsroom visited the restaurant to sit down with the restaurant’s general manager, Drianna Cardarelli, and asked about her thoughts on Live Translate for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

“I think it’s great for hospitality, especially for guests who don’t speak English,” shared Drianna. “I think that it will help a lot of guests feel more comfortable calling the restaurant with questions rather than reaching out to us through email or our online reservation platform.”

She saw Live Translate as a valuable tool for situations when a phone call is simpler than using an online platform, whether it’s for event planning or inquiring about job opportunities. “Sometimes, we have a lot of Spanish-speaking guests,” Drianna explained. “It would be great if they could just bypass asking to talk to someone fluent in Spanish. They can avoid having any issues at all — language barriers, gone.”

If you find yourself unsatisfied with your initial selection or Google's search results, feel free to recircle the on-screen content.

Enhancing Your Searches

Here's a valuable tip: as Google presents your Circle to Search results, you can enrich your search experience by providing additional context or posing specific questions related to your selection. Simply type (or use voice dictation) in the "Add to your search" field. For instance, after using Circle to Search on The Sphere, I asked, "How much are tickets for this place?"

Additionally, Google's innovative AI search features are revolutionary for mobile users, including those on iOS.

Exiting Circle to Search

When you've completed your search, tapping the back button on the navigation bar or swiping inward from either side of the screen will seamlessly exit you from the Circle to Search overlay, returning you to the underlying app. It's worth noting that images you use the feature on are not stored as screenshots.

New Nordic MICHELIN Star Restaurants to be Unveiled in Helsinki this May

 

The City of Helsinki will host the MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries Ceremony in May during which the latest Nordic restaurants that will be granted MICHELIN Stars will be revealed. Top Nordic players in the field will gather in Finland’s capital for the event, which is recognised as one of the world’s most famous food industry occurrences. Organized for the second time in a row in Finland, the event shines a spotlight on Helsinki’s and the rest of the country’s high-quality and versatile culinary scene.

The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries Ceremony will be held on 27 May 2024 at Helsinki’s Savoy Theatre and the Helsinki City Hall. The MICHELIN Stars awarded at the Ceremony are the most coveted and respected recognition of excellence in the restaurant industry. The MICHELIN Green Star, indicating role model restaurants committed to a more sustainable gastronomy, and other special awards will also be presented at the reveal.

Co-organised by the city together with the MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries and Visit Finland, the Ceremony will attract hundreds of restaurant industry professionals and international media representatives to Helsinki.

Nordic MICHELIN cooperation is a highlight of Helsinki's special food year

The MICHELIN unveiling ceremony offers Helsinki a unique opportunity to bring various food and drink-related events and experiences together. The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries publication highlights exceptional food in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. The 2023 edition of the Nordic Guide contained a total of 271 restaurants, 81 of which were rated with One, Two or Three MICHELIN Stars. Five of Finland's MICHELIN-Starred restaurants are located in the capital of Helsinki, with one more in the southwest coastal city of Turku and another in the southern city of Porvoo. In addition, MICHELIN Guide awards MICHELIN Green Stars to restaurants that offer first- class environmentally friendly and sustainable dining experiences. Three restaurants in Helsinki currently hold the MICHELIN Green Star.
