The RM44-mil Tanjung City Marina (TCM) in Penang, the first inner city marina in the country, was completed in October 2005 and is now fully operational. A local daily reported that it is part of a RM210 million project aimed at giving a facelift to the waterfront complete with colonial architecture to compliment the neighbouring heritage buildings.
The TCM project is funded by the Federal Government and managed by Penang Port Sdn Bhd. This project encompasses the redevelopment of the old Church Street Pier into a world-class marina complete with restaurants and a clubhouse.
The marina is strategically located on the waterfront of George Town at latitude 5° 24.9'N and longitude 100° 20.7'E. Occupying 1.6ha of the coastal land adjacent to the Weld Quay ferry terminal, the marina is within walking distance from the heart of the city.
The marina is able to cater to vessels up to a maximum draft of 4 meters. It has 102 berths ranging from 11 meters to 50 meters length and can accommodate up to 140 yachts and boats of various sizes.
Facilities and services at the marina include Customs, Immigration and Port Clearance (CIP), 24-hour security, electrical and water supply, shower rooms, toilets, laundry services, refuelling facilities and repairs as well as maintenance works.
There are also two restaurants, a café and a convenience store at the marina.
With the new marina, the state government hopes to turn Penang into an international cruise centre by attracting sailing vessels from all over the world. The marina management also plans to attract not only foreign tourists but locals as well. Marina manager, Captain Md. Suyud Suhaimi, also noted that the marina has the potential to be an entertainment hub for Penang, where shows and exhibitions could be frequently staged.
