Mayday is a Taiwanese band that originated in the late 1990’s but has since become one of the biggest rock bands in Taiwan pop culture, receiving a range of accolades as well as moving records all over the world. The band consist of five members; lead singer Ashin, guitarist / band leader Monster, guitarist Stone, bass player Masa and drummer Guanyou (formerly known as Yanming, or just Ming).
Mayday's songs are mostly sung in Mandarin. They project a clean and healthy image, and are immensely popular amongst the Taiwanese young people who identify with the band’s themes of innocence, dreams, loneliness and determination. At the same time, the band’s unique outlook of life has attracted many fans who find their views refreshing.
In 2001, they temporarily took a break at the peak of their popularity as vocalist Ashin, guitarist Monster, and bassist Masa were called up to be enlisted in national service. In August 2003, Masa returned from his national service term and together, Mayday held a reunion concert at the Taipei Municipal Stadium (Track & Field Stadium) - the very place where they held their debut concert. 40,000 fans attended the concert, breaking Taiwan's record for the largest number of fans at a concert, a record previously held by famous pop star Michael Jackson.
